CWS Sliding & Patio Doors: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide
We stock and install CWS-compatible sliding and patio door rollers, handles, locks, weatherstripping, and threshold caps for Long Beach homes. A typical hardware replacement runs $180 to $680 installed, depending on the part and whether the door is a standard 6’0” or a wider 8’0” to 12’0” panel. Most of the time, we can match the part without you hauling the old one to a showroom. You’ll know the problem before you see it: the panel goes from gliding two-fingered to needing a shoulder, a handle feels springy instead of solid, or the door simply won’t latch and Long Beach’s evening marine layer finds its way in.

Which CWS Models This Applies To
CWS has put its name on a few different sliding door lines over the years, and the parts are not interchangeable the way people assume. The two families we most often service in Long Beach are the CWS 950/960 Series (aluminum, mostly on homes built from the late 90s through about 2012) and the newer CWS 8000 Series (impact-rated, common on coastal remodels after 2013). Each uses a different roller housing depth and a different mortise lock footprint.
The fastest way to identify what you have: open the door and check the interlock stile – the vertical rail where the two panels meet. Most CWS doors carry a small aluminum tab or white sticker with the series number printed on it. If the sticker is gone, we can match the part by measuring the roller housing width with a caliper and reading the stamp on the lock faceplate. For Long Beach buyers, one gotcha matters: CWS 950 rollers were supplied in two carriage widths, 7/8” and 1-1/4”, in the same model year. If you order a generic “CWS roller” online, you have a coin flip’s chance of getting the wrong one. We keep both widths on the truck, plus OEM-equivalent CWS 8000 stainless rollers, so the job doesn’t stretch into a second visit.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for rollers and threshold caps we use OEM or exact-match equivalents. For CWS handle sets and lock cylinders, we’ll offer a direct OEM match when it’s still in production. When CWS has discontinued a handle finish and the only OEM choice is a mismatched color, we’ll tell you, and we’ll show you an aftermarket set that costs half and fits the existing mortise pocket.
Signs Your CWS Sliding & Patio Doors Is Failing
- The panel is getting harder to move. This almost always comes down to worn rollers or debris packed into the bottom track, and in Long Beach the culprit is frequently airborne grit that blows in off the beach and grinds into the nylon roller wheels. Once the roller housing bends under the load, the steel ball bearings chew into the track and the smooth glide goes for good.
- The lock won’t throw, or throws only halfway. Over a few years, the door panel sags a few millimeters as the rollers flatten. The lock bolt no longer lines up with the keeper in the jamb, and forcing the lever just deepens a gouge in the aluminum. This is a roller alignment fix, not a lock replacement, in most CWS cases we see around Long Beach.
- The handle is floppy or catches when you pull it. The internal return spring in the CWS mortise handle gives out, or the spindle that connects the inside and outside handles strips. It does not snap dramatically; it just gets loose enough that the door feels cheap every time you open it.
- You can feel air or see daylight at the meeting stile. The interlock weatherstrip on CWS panels is often a poly pile gasket that compresses hard after five to seven years in the Southern California sun. Once it flattens, the two panels don’t seal against each other, which is why an otherwise solid-looking door starts drafting in the winter and letting in dust in the summer.
- The door is grinding on the threshold or leaving aluminum shavings under the panel. This is the roller failure you cannot ignore. The wheel has seized, and now the stainless roller carriage is scraping the track, which will score the track beyond a simple roller swap if you keep using the door.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Installed CWS sliding door hardware in Long Beach tends to run like this, parts and labor together, based on what we actually see on the truck:
- Single roller carriage replacement (standard panel): $180 to $260 installed, including both rollers on the panel when we are already lifting the door.
- Impact-rated CWS 8000 roller assembly (stainless carriage, coastal spec): $230 to $340 installed per panel, given the heavier carriage and tighter mounting tolerance.
- Mortise handle set, interior and exterior, OEM CWS match: $220 to $430 depending on finish and whether the lock cylinder is re-keyed to your existing key.
- Weatherstripping and interlock pile replacement (full door perimeter): $120 to $210 installed.
- Threshold cap and seal replacement: $150 to $280 depending on door width and the condition of the sub-sill underneath.
The range is driven by two things: panel weight and whether the track has already been scored. A 12-foot panel with a warped track costs more to put right than a 6-foot standard panel with a snapped roller. We quote the price in writing before we touch a screw, and the line items are broken out: part, labor, and any track repair so you can see the numbers. The installation is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise, parts and labor, in writing. If a roller fails inside that window, we come back out and make it right, no charge, no argument.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a couple of things an owner can safely check. You can vacuum out the bottom track with a shop vac nozzle and a small brush, and you can check whether the door is still plumb by running a level against the vertical stile. If the panel is simply slow and the rollers are still turning, a clean track sometimes buys you another year.
Where DIY goes wrong is the moment the panel has to come out. A CWS glass panel is heavy, and a 950 Series unit with tempered glass routinely runs over 180 pounds. If the roller carriage has snapped, that panel is no longer sitting level in the track, and when you tilt it out alone it can come at you fast. I have repaired enough Long Beach doors where a homeowner got the panel out and couldn’t get it back in, or worse, got pinned in a doorway on a Friday evening, that I tell people plainly: if the door is grinding, dragging, or sagging, this is not a Saturday project. We bring two technicians, panel stands, and suction cups, and the swap typically takes us under an hour. Call (562) 317-8865 and we’ll give you a straight price before we schedule the visit.
FAQs
Expect six to nine years for standard CWS rollers in Long Beach, and closer to five or six for doors facing the onshore wind that carries sand and salt mist. We regularly see rollers in Belmont Shore and the peninsula fail in five years on west-facing doors, while the same hardware at an inland property goes a decade.
Rollers, handles, and weatherstrip are almost always replaced, not rebuilt. We can extend the life of a track with a light buff and a new stainless cap, but once a roller carriage cracks or a handle spring breaks, the part is done. Call (562) 317-8865 if you want an honest read before you buy anything online.
A standard CWS sliding door hardware replacement, including rollers plus handle or weatherstrip, takes one technician visit of 45 to 90 minutes. If the track needs repair or the panel has shifted in its frame, plan for up to two hours.
We keep common CWS 950/960 and 8000 Series rollers, handle sets, and weatherstripping on the truck, because those are the doors we run into most weeks in Long Beach. If we do have to order a finish-matched handle or a discontinued part, we’ll tell you the lead time before you commit. Call (562) 317-8865 and we’ll confirm the part and the price in the same conversation.
